Mountain Design — houses, chalets and cabins for the highland climate

About

Mountain architecture: designed for the cold and the highland landscape

Architecture designed for connection and warmth, shaped by the climate and nature of the highlands.

We design houses, chalets, cabins and tiny houses for mountain regions, in a cosy, contemporary style, with architecture of wide openings to the landscape, which is why so many people choose the mountains in the first place.

01

What makes good architecture for cold climates

Altitude, latitude and humidity define a place's climate. In Brazil, the coldest regions are in the South and Southeast, and the Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul highlands are among the coldest in the country.

With sub-zero temperatures in winter, architecture cannot do without thermal insulation in the building envelope and windows. Without it, a house can look beautiful and still be freezing from June to August.

02

Orientation, sun and wind

In southern Brazil, because of the latitude, south-facing façades get no sun even in summer. Siting the house therefore takes great care, so that bedrooms and living areas are not left in permanent shade.

Prevailing winds guide where the openings go. Cross-ventilation is always welcome, but on very cold days excessive airflow has to be controlled.

03

Walls, roofs and windows

Insulating walls and roofs is essential. In advanced systems such as light steel frame, insulation is placed inside the walls and above the ceilings.

There is a balance between insulation and window size, but large glazed areas only make a house cold when the frames lack proper seals, thickness and materials. With thermally efficient frames and double glazing, the connection with the landscape can be kept without losing comfort.

04

Floors and heating systems

Any floor finish can be used in the highlands, but whenever possible we recommend underfloor heating, electric or gas. When the budget does not allow it, wood, carpet or vinyl floors with rugs make walking around more comfortable.

Heating options range from fireplaces and heaters to wood stoves and hot-water circulation systems. Split air-conditioners have become popular, but residents tend not to like them much for heating.

FAQ

Mountain architecture: frequently asked questions

What is the best construction system for a mountain house?

Thermal performance matters most. Light steel frame, modular construction and SIP panels build insulation into walls and roofs and allow faster, cleaner builds, an advantage on hard-to-reach plots. The choice is made with the client, based on the site, timeline and budget.

Do large windows make a house cold?

Only when the windows perform poorly. With proper seals, high-performance frames and double glazing, you can have large openings to the landscape and a comfortable home in winter.

What is the best heating for a mountain house?

Underfloor heating, electric or gas, is the most recommended for everyday comfort, and can be combined with a fireplace or wood stove. Ideally the system is defined at the design stage, together with the insulation.

Do you have projects in Urubici?

Yes. Casa Montez, Casa DP, Chalé Aconchego, Chalé Vistta and Chácara Mount Sabbó are all in Urubici. The studio also has projects in Urupema and Rancho Queimado.
